Israel: Traffic Signal Cameras Recording Vehicular Speed Too
Cameras posted at traffic signals that once photographed drivers passing a red light only are now also taking pictures documenting the speed of drivers exceeding the speed limit. According to a Channel 2 News report, the reason is that during a one week period nine cameras documented that over 52,000 drivers passed a traffic signal camera while exceeding the 90 KPH speed limit at those intersections.
Police add that only 500 drivers were given a summons and therefore, the intersection cameras will now also monitor vehicular speed.
During March and April 2012, police issued over 4,200 speeding tickets via cameras on a number of roads, amounting to an income of 3 million NIS.
Two new cameras begin operating today, Monday. One is situated on Route 5 and the second at N’vei Yamin Junction. They will monitor compliance with the traffic signal and vehicular speed.
