Taxi Commission Holds Hearing On Fare Hikes

The New York Taxi and Limousine Commission is holding a public hearing on possible taxi fare hikes.

The proposed plan would increase the average ride by 17 percent. The base fare of $2.50 will not increase but the mileage charge will.

The flat rate fee to or from John F. Kennedy Airport will rise from $45 to $52. The surcharge to travel to or from Newark Liberty International Airport will jump from $15 to $17.50.

Proposed surcharges will include one for rush-hour traffic and another for nighttime travel.

The public hearing on Monday also will explore the option of better health care packages for cab drivers.

The vote on the proposed fare hike is scheduled for Thursday.
